About the Society
The SPS is a Nation wide society of undergraduate physics students who coalesce to form these globular clusters known as “chapters” in which they socially interact with each other forming tighter Sigma-Pi-Sigma bonds, occasionally colliding with other “chapters” in what can be described as an “explosion of physicy fun!”
But seriously, the National website describes SPS as:
The Society of Physics Students (SPS) is a professional association explicitly designed for students. Membership, through collegiate chapters, is open to anyone interested in physics. The only requirement for membership is that you be interested in physics. Besides physics majors, our members include majors in chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, mathematics, medicine, and other fields.
Within the SPS, Sigma Pi Sigma, a nationally recognized scholastic honor society, elects members on the basis of outstanding academic achievement. This two-in-one Society operates within the American Institute of Physics (AIP).
Being a member of the society has a lot of perks, and I’m sure there is even more then we list here, but the main thing to keep in mind is
As it stands now, most of us aren’t even members. It pays to be, but is by no way required. More than anything, we are here to form a stronger, more social undergraduate community with more resources to better succeed in our college career and life as a whole.

Membership Benefits:
- Physics Today
- The SPS Observer
- Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics
- Career Placement Services
- Eligibility for scholarships, internships, research & travel grants, and other awards
- Free membership with one AIP Member Society for undergraduates only, for up to three years.
Membership Requirements:
- Interest in physics!
- Annual dues of $20 (”to cover in part, the cost of the Society’s services”)
If you decide to join the SPS, please let us know. (They are way to slow about getting back to us!)
Want more information? Have some questions? You can ask us, or you can check out their website. Either way, you will get your answers.
