ATLAS and the LHC
What happened to this quarter? Today’s is the final general meeting of the term. It will take place at 5:00 PM in ISB 231/235, and it promises to be a very interesting one. Alex Grillo is a research physicist upstairs at SCIPP, and the details of the presentation and his provided abstract are as follows:
SPEAKER: Alex Grillo, Ph.D., SCIPP
TOPIC: The ATLAS Project, a Search for New Physics at the High Energy Frontier
Members of the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) have been a part of the ATLAS Collaboration for the past 12 years, developing and building a large particle detector to be used at the new Large Hadron Collider (LHC) under construction at the CERN Laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland. Physics experimentation is now scheduled to start in 2007. Why has this group of physicists worked so long and so hard to build such an instrument? What are the prospects for discovery? These questions will be discussed as part of a description of the project, Santa Cruz’s contributions and the expectations for the study of particle physics beyond the Standard Model.
This should nicely complement Howard Haber’s presentation on the Higgs boson from last quarter and if you remember correctly, that presentation was phenomenal.
You will also find phenomenal coffee, soda, and some food.
Everyone is welcome and invited.
–James
