Hey, why was the library closed all morning?

I hope you’re enjoying spring break. Don’t think about the Frobenius method for ODEs at all. Trust me. There’ll be plenty of time for that later.

Okay, think about it a little bit. But just a little.

Winter quarter was full of good presentations. Spring will be, too. The first meeting will be on Thursday, April 13th, 2006, in ISB 231/235, featuring a yet-to-be-determined speaker. Check the Meeting Schedule from time to time for updates.

The Higgs Boson? The Higgs Boson.

1) Meeting today, March 9th, 2006, in ISB 231/235, at 5 PM:

Speaker: Professor Howard Haber, UCSC
Topic: The Higgs boson
The Higgs boson. What is it? Why is it? How is it? Why is it so important to physics? Prof. Haber will attempt to answer these questions on the level of the upper division undergraduate, more in depth than these but less in depth than this, which is not easy to do. Furthermore, this will allow us 116A types to get to know what Prof. Haber does when he’s not blazing through an eigenvector lecture or writing comprehensive, text-replacing (I mean -supplementing) handouts.

This will be the last general meeting of the quarter, so come and have enough coffee and snacks to last you till April 13th.2) We had a ninja-style BBQ on Monday, at the College Nine/Ten Community Room. It rained again. Some people conjectured that I was personally responsible for the rain. This is, of course, an impossibility, since I don’t control the weather — yet. I may some day, especially if I’m able to master and harness the descriptive power of…

3) The Lorenz equations. Thanks again to Prof. Peter Scott for last week’s presentation on the Lorenz equations. The Lorenz attractor is, indeed, very attractive, and there may be plans afoot to build our own Lorenz water wheel. Email somebody if you want to be involved.

Wow, the quarter’s almost over. Winter 2006, we hardly knew ye.
