Many thanks are due Professor Peter Young for last week’s Mathematica intro. You can find his “Introduction to Mathematica” notebook here (open with Mathematica itself; see below) and Prof. Young’s website itself is here. And, if want to know where you can access Mathematica without selling one of your livers to fund your own copy, according to this list Mathematica can be found in the following computer labs:
SS1
Porter
Cowell Apts
BE 109
Kresge
Ming Ong
And we have another meeting this Thursday, at 5 PM in ISB 231. It will go something like this:
Speaker: Prof. Stanley Flatte, UCSC
Topic: “Wave Equations and Propagating Beams, with application to Ocean Sound and Atmospheric Optics.”
Prof. Flatte will also cover the relationships between these classical areas and quantum mechanics; in particular, the Schroedinger Wave Equation, quite possibly the greatest wave equation in the history of wave equations. Yes, that’s me editorializing. Okay, the Klein-Gordon is pretty good, too. Fine.
I’ll try to save you some coffee and stuff, but if you’re too late, I can’t promise anything.

Last Thursday’s talk by Joel Kent was outstanding. The presentation was good and the lab demonstration afterward (once we had tamed the equipment) was even better. There were several good senior thesis ideas presented. If you’re at all interested in pursuing any of them (or for a better idea as to what they might be), contact Prof. Josh Deutsch for more information. Thanks again to both Joel and Josh.
The next meeting is this Thursday, January 19th, at 5 PM in ISB 231, and it will look like this:
Speaker: Prof. Peter Young, UCSC
Topic: Introduction to Mathematica
Mathematica. We know it’s powerful. We know it’s useful. We know that it’s slightly opaque. Professor Young will remove this opacity and give enough of an introduction that we can be better prepared to experiment with it on our own. As a proud member of the winter quarter 116A contingent, I’m particularly interested in this one. Bessel will not pwnz0r me, I will pwnz0r Bessel.
Coffee, snacks, etc. You know this by now. Just be there.

Welcome back. Hopefully your break was both relaxing and life-affirming, because this quarter promises to be a stressful pressure-cooker of anxiety and self-loathing.
To counteract this inevitability, come to SPS meetings. We have an entire quarter’s worth of spectacular weekly presentations lined up. You can see the meeting presentation schedule here(Link was broken, now it is fixed. –Rion) and you can check out the full events calendar here.
The first meeting is this Thursday, January 12th, at 5 PM in ISB 231, and the details are as follows:
Speaker: Joel Kent, Manager, Advanced Technology Group, Elo TouchSystems, Inc.
Topic: The physics of touchscreen technology
Joel used to be faculty here at UCSC and now (obviously) works in industry. There’s a chance that this could lead to a really good senior thesis for one or more people, and that set of one or more people could include you. We have tentative plans to have a hands-on demo in one of the labs after the presentation, for those interested. Professor Josh Deutsch deserves a special thanks for putting us in touch with Joel.
We will, of course, be featuring the usual snacks and stuff, but their deliciousness will no doubt pale in comparison to the quality of talk, so food is hardly an enticement.
I will see you there. If I don’t, don’t expect me to help you with the 3-D TDSE any time soon. I know, I know; I’m cruel.
